Meet Dr. Wills
Dr. Maury Wills is a native of Austin, Texas. Dr. Wills’ skills as an educator have developed throughout a successful career in various fields of education. As an avid musician and drum major, he has always marched to his own beat, especially to that of a sound and quality education. For this reason, Dr. Wills has been an advocate for children, a supporter of educators, and collaborator for parents.
Dr. Wills is a product of The Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas; and an honored graduate of Lyndon Baines Johnson Science Academy High School. As an honored scholar, graduating in the top ten percent of his class and one of the best drum major's in the land, Dr. Wills continued his educational journey at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received his B.A. in Psychology. As a continuous learner, Dr. Wills went on to pursue his Masters in Education, Specialist in Educational Leadership, and finally, his terminal degree, a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA.
Pursuing his goals in education wasn't a small feat, but great milestones, as he served as a 1st and 2nd grade teacher, 5th grade teacher, special education teacher, and finally becoming one of the youngest principals in his former school district at the age of 29. With his past experiences in the teaching and learning fields, community and parenting corroborative skills, Dr. Wills was sought after to lead the DeKalb Agriculture Technology and Environment Charter School, Inc. His profound knowledge, tenacity, and dedication to his children have benefited the school community at large, His leadership and commitment to the charter movement have also increased continuous and ongoing academic achievement, better parental and community involvement, and fiscal accountability that is recognized locally, regionally, and nationwide.
With a solid background in educational research and evaluation, Dr. Wills has also served as a consultant to, or member of, numerous educational organizations and initiatives including, Mercer University Educational Study Panel, William Fulbright Scholar Program, Georgia Association of Educators, Association of Curriculum and Instruction, and Association of Supervision and Instruction. He has also received numerous awards and honors including, Extra Mile Award Teacher of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Atlanta Constitution and Journal Teacher of the Year Recipient. Dr. Wills was also honored as a William Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar Recipient having the opportunity to study abroad in Japan, which he was only one of two Georgians selected for this prestigious honor. In addition, Dr. Wills has been invited as a guest lecturer to speak in England on behalf of the charter schools of America.
Dr. Wills’ instructional leadership is deeply rooted in his philosophy of excellence and learning; “Every student will learn, given the opportunity to embrace a climate of high expectations, a committed support system, and connections to the context of the real world, the Three R’s: Learning with Relationships, Relevance, and Rigor!”
As Dr. Maury Wills continues to take risks and challenge the status quo to seek for better teaching and learning opportunities; he will continue to put the pieces together for the children and the community he services.
